Isle Of Hope

Isle of Hope is a historic island located in the Southeastern portion of Savannah, Georgia. Its antebellum-style homes can be found nestled within large oak trees and along the Intracoastal Waterway. With a rich history and tons of things to do, the city remains a popular and picturesque travel hotspot. 

During the 19th century, Isle of Hope was created as a retreat for the wealthiest population of the nearby city of Savannah. The small district offered a cool and safe harbor from the overbearing heat, and malaria outbreaks in the neighboring areas. Henry Parker, the district's original owner, took the land and divided it up among the wealthy elite in Savannah, who then went on to build large mansions along the water. In 1871, a railroad was built which connected Isle of Hope with Savannah. This led to a massive influx of residents by the early 20th century. Old oak trees covered in Spanish moss cover much of the area and adorn the historic homes and gardens. The homes feature various architectural styles, such as Greek Revival, Victorian, Neoclassical, and Craftsman Bungalows. 

If you plan to visit, be prepared for sweltering summers and cooler, wet winters. The hot season runs from about late May to early September, with an average daily temperature above 85°F. The cold season runs from about late November to late February, with an average daily temperature below 67°F. Most locals would recommend visiting in early April to late May and late September to late October to enjoy the weather appropriate activities the island has to offer. 

If you are a film buff, you may recognize some familiar sights. The Wormsloe Historic Site, for example, has been featured in movies like The General's Daughter. The beautiful tree-lined entry was also featured in The Last Song starring Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus. The 18th-century colonial estate offers miles of walking trails, a museum, and interesting outdoor artifacts. With a small admission fee of $10, it is no surprise that many people visit the historic site.

Another great tourist spot to walk along is Bluff Drive, a narrow street that begins at La Roche Avenue and ends at Noble Glen Drive. This walkway features historic mansions and cottages built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and gorgeous Intracoastal Waterway views. You can also find the Isle of Hope Marina along Bluff Drive, a popular spot for boaters in the area.
