Bed Bugs

They feed only on blood; they come out at night; they can travel across the country without wings and boy, do they put up a fight. We're not talking about vampires here – we mean those terrifying pests, Bed Bugs.

If we had a scary story to tell in the dark, Bed Bugs might be our go-to tale. Imagine this: a small, flat, wingless red insect sneaks up to you while you're sleeping, pierces your skin with a long, needle-like beak, and feasts on your blood, gorging up to 6 times its body weight. You're picturing only one Bed Bug, right? Well, the Georgia Division of Public Health says a single female Bed Bug can lay 200 eggs. The mother hides the eggs in cracks within the floorboards, and crevices in the bed frame, and once they hatch, the nymphs begin feeding immediately. And once they've found a nice spot, they're there to stay – Bed Bugs can live almost a year.

It isn't just the fact that these bugs are sucking your blood that makes them so spooky. They're also especially stealthy about it. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention explains the bugs inject an anesthetic as they're biting, so you don't wake up. An anticoagulant in their saliva makes it so that most people don't even develop any visible signs of the bite until days after. Plus, the bite marks seem similar to those of a mosquito or flea. So, say it takes you four days to even start suspecting there could be a problem. That's four days that the bugs have been expanding their numbers and territory they've conquered throughout your home and spreading from your home to anywhere else you travel.

Bed Bugs crawl extremely fast and are so small that they can squeeze inside of walls and ceilings to get into a building, and then hitch a ride in your suitcase, car, hair, or clothing once they've found their way in. That means they can find their way in just about anywhere, at any time. Once they've eaten or found a place they like, they hide, and they can stay hidden for months. Anyone and everyone is susceptible. In South Carolina, there's even a law that says hotels and apartments have to notify people of a Bed Bug infestation. But what if the hotel hasn't noticed yet?

The Georgia DPH says Bed Bugs must be taken care of by a licensed pest control service. The stress of an infestation can cause anxiety, insomnia, and even depression; getting rid of the bugs without a pest control professional trained explicitly in Bed Bug treatment is nearly impossible.
